The Library of Babel – Algorithms of text generation

“The Library of Babel” is a 1941 story by Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges. The endless library, a universe of hexagonal galleries, contains all the combinatorially possible books with 410 pages. Borges describes how librarians explore this world of books and try to find meaning in them. To discover even single, coherent sentences in the texts already means great happiness. This universe of printed books will be contrasted in the workshop with the world of algorithmically generated and analyzed texts. What changes when libraries are read, searched, interpreted and also written not only by humans but also by algorithms – which are themselves only text and thus always already part of the Library of Babel? On the basis of concrete program examples, the new chiastic interplay of texts and source texts (operands and operators) is shown cursorily. Questions about authorship, bias, text comprehension, etc. are raised anew by AI algorithms. One can only get closer to answering them if one questions the algorithms.

Die Bibliothek von Babel – Algorithmen der Textgenerierung

«Die Bibliothek von Babel» ist eine Erzählung des argentinischen Schriftstellers Jorge Luis Borges aus dem Jahr 1941. Die endlose Bibliothek, ein Universum von sechseckigen Galerien, enthält alle kombinatorisch möglichen Bücher mit 410 Seiten. Borges beschreibt, wie die Bibliothekare diese Bücherwelt erforschen und versuchen, Sinn in den Büchern zu finden. Auch nur einzelne, zusammenhängende Sätze in den Texten zu entdecken, bedeutet bereits ein großes Glück. Diesem Universum gedruckter Bücher wird im Workshop die Welt der algorithmisch erzeugten und analysierten Texte gegenübergestellt. Was verändert sich, wenn Bibliotheken nicht nur von Menschen, sondern auch von Algorithmen – die selbst wieder nur Text und damit immer schon Teil der Bibliothek von Babel sind – gelesen, durchsucht, interpretiert und auch geschrieben werden? Anhand konkreter Programmbeispiele wird kursorisch das neue chiastische Wechselspiel von Texten und Quelltexten (Operanden und Operatoren) gezeigt. Fragen zu Autorschaft, Bias, Textverstehen u.v.a. stellen sich durch die KI-Algorithmen neu. Ihrer Beantwortung kommt man nur näher, wenn man die Algorithmen hinterfragt.
