A pragmatic approach to being in the world
„Philosophers until now have only interpreted the world in various ways. The point, however, is to change it.” (Karl Marx)
Abstract
Building on the foundations of cybernetics and philosophical pragmatism, I am arguing for aesthetic experience and physical interactions in the (art)world without the necessity to first and foremost view the world with analytical eyes. I suggest the actual use of (decontextualized) matter and tacit knowledge in the tradition of craftsmanship and a specific kind of artistic research as an addition to analytical approaches. This will be investigated through the guiding line of philosopher Andrew Pickering’s interpretation of poiesis as a “doing without knowledge” and philosopher Tim Ingold’s „thinking through making“. I consider those thoughts not only relevant to science and art but any kind of interacting with the world, be it creating own experiences in everyday life or enabling such experiences for others through teaching. Therefore I will be drawing examples from fields as diverse as visual arts, musical instrument building, digitality, sound art/experimental music, programming and teaching. My personal experiences and associations with the works of Berlin based artist Susi Sie will offer a framework for my explorations.
